The National Philatelic Museum is a cultural
institution who's mission is to inform and educate
through stamps, letters and any other postal items.
The word "philately" apeared in 1864 and is a
combination of the greek words "philos" and "atelia"
the result having the rough translation "love for tax
free things".
The Museum is located inside National History Museum
building, a neo classic arhitectural conception by
arh. Al. Săvulescu.Untill 1970 the Central Office
of the Romanian Post was located here. The building was
renovated and turned into The National History
Museum.
Although the idea of a Postal Museum is an old one,
only in 1906 the first step was made in that
direction. During the General Exhibition of
1906, arh. Grigore Cherchez introduced the public to old
postal items and stamps, organised as the first
museum located inside on old inn. Unfortunatelly the
museum had a short life.
2004 is the year of birth for The National Philatelic
Museum, an objective achieved by hard work put up by
al those enthuziasts by postal and philately history.
The Museum is organised in a space of, three rooms
of apr. 600 square meters where visitors can admire a
piece of Romanian Post history.
